Roofing Terms:

 

1. Drip Edge Flashing

Drip edge flashing helps keep water from wicking back under the shingles. Drip edges are corner-shaped metal strips that nail along the edges of the roof. They allow water from the roof to run cleanly off the edge and into gutter system. Without a drip edge, water may run down the side of the fascia and siding - causing stains and eventual damage. The drip edge also supports the part of the shingle that extends past the decking.

　

2. Apron Flashing

Apron flashings prevents leaks at roof to wall and roof pitch transitions, it is used on the top of the shingle when it meets a vertical termination such as a wall or another roof section. They are pieces of metal, usually aluminum, that prevent water from entering between the shingle and the wall or roof transition.

3. Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing systems are usually copper or aluminum and custom made on site to match your chimney dimensions and roof pitch. Consist of 1 base flashing installed onto roof surface at low end of chimney, continuous step flashings installed onto roof surface on both sides of chimney, 1 head flashing installed onto roof surface on high end of chimney, continuous counter flashings installed and sealed onto chimney surface overlapping base, step and head flashings.

4. Pipe Flashing

Aluminum base with neoprene grommet that seals roof penetrations against water damage around the vent pipe through the roof.

 

5. Step Flashing

Step flashing is used on the side of the shingle when it meets a vertical termination such as a wall. They are pieces of metal, usually aluminum, that prevent water from entering between the shingle and the wall. Step flashing is bent at almost a 90 degree angle and placed underneath each course of shingle and then up against the wall.

 

6. Felt Underlayment

Roofing felt is the layer of asphalt saturated paper that goes underneath roofing shingles in order to ensure that no water leaks into your home. There are a wide variety of underlayment available in the marketplace today. Below are some of the most common:

A. #15 lb Roofing Felt 9 lbs per 100 sq ft. Cheapest, Lightest and most common felt found on residential new construction roof applications.

B. #30 lb Roofing Felt 16 lbs per 100 sq ft. A Mid-grade felt, the most common choice for professional remodeling contractors who know the importance of roofing underlayment.

C. Roofers Select (Certainteed) 11 lbs per 100 sq ft. Premium Fiberglass reinforced roofing underlayment from CertainTeed.

 

7. Ice/Water Shield Underlayment

Roofing Ice and Water shield is a critical component to any new roofing system especially in cold weather climates. Local building codes require that Ice and Water Shield must start at the roofs eave edge and extend 2 ft inside heated wall space of a structure. Ice and Water Shield is a peel and stick product that adheres directly to the roof deck. It forms a water-proof barrier where ice most often builds up.

8. Ridge Vent

A ridge vent runs the entire length of the roof peak, blending into the roofline for a more attractive home. Years of research prove that a ridge vent with external baffles and an internal weather filter, combined with undereave venting, is the most efficient attic ventilation system you can install.
